Integrative psychotherapy in Clifton village, Bristol — short term or long term, in English or French.

The offer

I offer both short term and long term psychotherapy. Short term work is usually six to twelve sessions, focused on one particular area of concern. Long term work is open-ended, and has more room for the past.

The first session is a meeting rather than a decision. You can say what has brought you, ask whatever you want to ask, and get a sense of whether you would be comfortable working with me. I am making the same judgement. If it is not right, I will say so.

After six sessions we review the work together: what has changed, what has not, and whether to carry on.

2

Approach

My training is integrative. In practice that means two traditions are in the room: psychoanalytic thinking, which notices patterns that began early and repeat without being seen, and humanistic thinking, which holds that you are the authority on your own life. I use both, in the proportion each piece of work seems to ask for.

I do not arrive with one theory and fit you to it.

Some of what we do is about the present — what is difficult now, and what might help. Some of it, when it is appropriate, is about the past. I work in English and in French.

Questions

What happens in the initial session?

We meet, and you say as much or as little as you want about what has brought you. You can ask me anything. I will ask a little about your history and what you are hoping for. At the end we both decide whether to go on. It is a chance to see whether the match feels right, not a commitment.

How long does a session last?

Fifty minutes, at a set time each week. Short term work is usually six to twelve sessions. Otherwise the work is open-ended, and we agree the ending together when the time comes.

What if you are not the right therapist for me?

Then we stop, and there is no obligation to stay. Sometimes the review after six sessions is where that becomes clear. I will do my best to refer you to someone who might be more suitable.
